Are you ready to take the first step to becoming a licensed driver? Achieving such a milestone will not be easy, but with preparation and determination, any goal is within your reach. In Ontario, residents aged 16 and older can start the graduated driver licensing process, which consists of three stages: G1, G2, and full G. To obtain a G1 licence, you must pass a vision test, pay the necessary fees, provide identification documents and pass a 40-question knowledge exam. With a G1 licence, you’re allowed to drive only if a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience is in your vehicle’s front passenger seat. There are several other restrictions you must follow: no driving between midnight and 5 AM, no driving on 400-series highways or expressways (unless you’re under the supervision of a licensed driving instructor), and you must maintain a zero blood alcohol level. During this time, you will gain behind-the-wheel experience and prepare for the G2 road test (also known as the G1 exit test).

As you begin your learning phase, you build the foundation of your driving skills. There are no shortcuts, and you cannot rely on luck. All questions on the G1 test are multiple choice and based on the official Ontario driver’s handbook, which all aspiring drivers should read at least once.
